Silicone flake resin is an uncrosslinked silicone resin (prepolymer) that exists as a brittle, hard, white or translucent flake-like solid at room temperature. It has a solids content approaching 100% and is free of residual solvents. Typically, it consists of methyl/phenyl silsesquioxanes containing silanol groups (Si-OH) and serves as a condensation-curing thermosetting silicone resin intermediate.
In simple terms: While many standard silicone resins are liquids or solutions, flake resin is a solid flake raw material obtained after solvent removal. Before use, it can be dissolved in organic solvents such as xylene or toluene; upon heating and catalysis, it undergoes condensation crosslinking to form a cured silicone resin with a three-dimensional network structure.
Molecular Structure and Key Characteristics
Backbone: Si-O-Si structure with high bond energy, offering resistance to heat, UV radiation, and aging;
Functional Groups: High content of silanol groups; curing is achieved through heat-induced condensation and dehydration;
Physical Form: Brittle, thin flakes; easy to break, store, and transport; zero VOC content;
Solubility: Soluble in aromatic organic solvents; capable of incorporating high loadings of inorganic fillers;
Properties After Curing: High-temperature resistance (long-term 200–400°C, higher for short durations), hydrophobicity, excellent electrical insulation, arc resistance, weather and UV resistance, resistance to chalking, and good gloss and color retention.
